Finding God in the Red Light: How Everyday Moments Lead Me to Reflect on Faith and Growth

Pause and reflect: Finding God’s guidance in life’s small moments.

There’s something about red lights that makes my anxiety spike—especially when I’m turning left across traffic. If I’m at a light, I find myself praying. Every time. It’s always the same prayer: “Lord, please either turn this light red so I can wait for the green arrow, or open up the traffic so I know it’s safe to go.”

Sometimes, the light changes right away, or the cars seem to part just in time, and I feel this overwhelming sense of reassurance—like God’s letting me know He’s there, walking with me. But other times, He doesn’t answer so quickly. And instead of feeling abandoned or ignored, I’ve come to see these moments as His way of gently asking me to pause and reflect.

What the Red Light Taught Me

At first, I thought my anxiety about red lights and traffic might just be a neurodivergent quirk—a hyper-awareness of danger, the need for order in a chaotic situation, or maybe just the way my brain processes stress. But over time, I realized these moments of tension had become something more. They had become a way for God to speak to me.

When the light doesn’t change or the traffic doesn’t part, I don’t assume it’s because God is angry with me. Instead, I see it as His invitation to ask myself a question: “What in my life do I need to examine?”

Maybe I’ve been neglecting something important, like my quiet time with Him, or maybe there’s a relationship I need to mend. Sometimes, it’s just a reminder to slow down and trust Him more deeply. Whatever it is, these red light moments have become sacred pauses—a chance to realign my heart with His.

Prayer in the Pause

I used to think faith was all about the big moments—the mountain-top experiences, the answered prayers, the breakthroughs. But lately, I’ve learned that faith is just as much about the everyday pauses, like sitting at a red light or waiting for the traffic to clear.

I’ve started to use these moments as an opportunity to pray and reflect:

“Lord, what are You trying to show me right now?”

“Is there something in my life You’re asking me to examine?”

“Help me trust You, whether the light changes or not.”

Sometimes, the answer comes quickly. Other times, it takes days or weeks of reflection. But either way, I’ve come to see these pauses as a gift.

For the Neurodivergent Soul

If you’re like me and your neurodivergence makes you see patterns, assign meaning, or find comfort in routines, let me encourage you: God meets us exactly where we are. He doesn’t expect us to think or pray or reflect in the same way as anyone else. For me, red lights have become a touchpoint where my faith and neurodivergence intertwine—a reminder that God speaks to us in the language of our hearts, even if it’s through something as small as a traffic light.

The Bigger Lesson

At the end of the day, what I’ve learned from these moments is that God is always present, always speaking, and always inviting us to grow. Whether the light changes or stays red, His love doesn’t waver. His goal isn’t for me to be perfect—it’s for me to be in relationship with Him, trusting His timing and His plan.

So, the next time you’re stuck at a red light—or in any moment of waiting—consider pausing to ask yourself:

“What is God showing me here?” You might be surprised by what you discover.
